The history of Neapolitan Theatre
This course aims to provide a comprehensive history of the Neapolitan Theatre.The main features of the Commedia dell’Arte, the mask of Pulcinella and its representations in the Neapolitan comedy will be investigated. Students will be introduced to some of the most important modern playwrights such as : Scarpetta, Viviani, De Filippo and Salemme, as well as to famous actors of Neapolitan comedy such as Totò and Troisi.
Participants will analyze language and contents of different comedies and plays in order to trace the main features which characterized the Neapolitan theatre. The course also includes attendance to Neapolitan plays in local theatres.
Course Schedule:
4 weeks/ 60 lessons (each lesson: 45 minutes)
15 lessons per week/ 3 lessons a day from Monday to Friday
Number of Credits: 3 credits
Learning outcomes:
At the completion of this course, participants will:
- Be familiar with the most important features of the Neapolitan theatre
- Analyze language and contents of some plays of the Neapolitan comedy
- Develop an understanding of contemporary Neapolitan theatre
- Be familiar with a broad range of theatrical terminology
Assessment:
Attendance (20%), Course participation ( 5%) Assignments ( 3 short papers- 10%) Mid-term exam (15%), Oral presentation (10%), Final exam (40%)
Professors and Instructors: This course will be taught by Professors with MA or PHD in Theatre or History of Theatre
