Greek and Roman Art in Southern Italy
This course aims to offer a wide view of the Greek Art (painting and sculpture) and of its influence in the Southern Italy with a particular reference to the area of Campania (Naples, Salerno and Paestum). Furthermore, the course will focus on the Etruscans (with a guided visit to the Etruscan area of Salerno) and on the Roman Art and architecture. A particular attention will be given to the Roman cities of Pompeii and Ercolaneum, the towns and villas buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 C.E. It also explores the layout and decoration of ancient Roman houses, the variety of artifacts uncovered as evidence for daily life and the history of the excavations.
Course Schedule:
Contact hours of lessons: 45
Guided excursions: 15 hours
On site visits: 4 full day on- site visits to Paestum, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples. On site visits are usually scheduled on weekends.
Number of Credits: 3 credits
Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this art history course, participants will:
- Have a clear understanding of the the main features of the Greek and Roman Art
- Be able to identify and understand the key trends of Greek and Roman Mythology in art crafts
- Have a clear understanding of the Etruscan and Roman Life
- Have a good knoweledge of the main monuments, archaeological sites in Campania
Assessment:
Final grades are based upon a midterm and final exams, the term paper, class attendance and participation, class homework. Assessment criteria will be agreed with the University professors.
