Introduction to Classical Archaeology
This course is a historical survey of the archaeology and art of Greece, Etruria and Rome.
Students will learn all the most important phases which characterize an archaeological discovery: catalog, restoration, conservation, and storage of the findings. The courses focuses on the archeological discoveries in Pompeii, Ercolano and Paestum with a comparison between Greek and Roman Art. Particular relevance will be given to the Etruscan civilization as in Salerno there is an important Etruscan archaeological site. Guided excursions and workshops on the ruins with experts will be organized.
Guided excursions are included in the course.
Course Schedule:
Contact hours: 45 lessons
Guided Excursions- 15 hours: 4 full day excursions (Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum archaeological sites and the Archaeological Museum of Naples).
Number of Credits: 3 credits
Learning outcomes:
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of core knowledge of the history and basic theoretical foundations in archaeology
- Demonstrate an understanding of archaeological evidence in Southern Italy for through the experience of working with primary data during fieldtrips and museum sessions
- Be able to determine the main features of Etruria, Roman and Greek funds
- Develop a basic understanding of the key archaeological methods and techniques
Assessment:
Final written exam (50%), mid-term essay ( 1500 words) (30%), worksheets based upon field trip, (20%)
